Nothing pleases the heart of a writer more than to know that their work has had an impact. When I feel as though I’m not making any progress in my writing, I come across a thank you note written long ago or an email from a reader who has just discovered my work. Both are treasured. But I think the comments that mean the most are those from people who are undergoing difficult times or illness. Sometimes one of my poems or other pieces has helped someone just when they’ve needed it; and their taking the time to write and comment on my work inspires me to keep writing. The thought that God could use me to touch the hearts of those in distress is both humbling and encouraging.
I rediscovered a thank you note the other day that brought memories of a dear lady that had been gifted my book, Egrets Rise, as she battled cancer. Though she lost her battle here on earth, her life and kindness are remembered fondly. I’d like to share with you the poem she mentioned in her note.
Garden Rest
I just want to sit in your garden
listen to the gentle breeze
feel the quiet moment
I want to rest my mind
breathe in the beauty
see nothing but peace
Refresh my spirit, O Lord
pour out your still water
let me lie in the cool grass
of your love
